The End of NaNoWriMo: Where Do We Go From Here?

Okay, we realize this post is WAY overdue, but we wanted to make it anyway. Let’s talk about the end of NaNoWriMo, our progress this year, if we won, and where we go from here!

So we made a mid-NaNo update, which you can see HERE, but now we want to talk about how we did in NaNo and what we wrote.

Well, this year, we finally got our fantasy caps on again. We wrote an upper YA fantasy from dual POV, and it’s diverse. Won’t say too much more than that, but seriously, it was so fun! It will need a LOT of work, though. First drafts are yucky and should be outlawed but let’s be real, you NEED to have one if you want to go anywhere with your novel. The first draft is just the base, even if you do read it and it makes you cry…

As for if we won? Why don’t you take a look at the chart yourself!nano 3

So we stagnated for a while, and it wasn’t till the end that we reached one of the daily goals, but hey, we WON. AGAIN. YAY. 😀

So, where do we go from here? Well, we’re not actually finished writing the novel. We haven’t touched it in over a week because we’re focusing on revisions for another book, but we can’t wait to finish it (hopefully) this month. It’ll probably end up being more than 70k, just because it’s fantasy. We’ll see!

We’re definitely going to have to go back through the manuscript and fix things, especially the world building. There wasn’t a lot of it in the first draft, and we definitely need to work on outlining the novel better and fleshing it out more. As we’ve written the book, we’ve gotten a greater sense of the characters, but still slightly need to work on their motives.

The point is, there is still a lot of writing to be done–and then a lot of revising. People are often surprised to hear when we say that revising a book takes 2-3 times longer (hey, maybe even more!) than writing the book itself. Revision is what makes a book great! 😀

Overall, we’re happy we participated in NaNoWriMo 2015! We love this new novel, and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever written. We took a lot of inspiration from novels like AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, LEGEND, and THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Hopefully that all adds up to a great novel!

Also, this novel is still nameless. Oops. Better work on that soon.

How did NaNo go for you if you participated? Do you plan on participating in the future? Leave your thoughts in the comments below! Happy writing! 🙂
