Reasons Why We Love The Hunger Games

Hey, all! We realize this is a bit late, but now that Mockingjay Part 2 is out (and we still haven’t seen it! *GASP* No spoilers, please!) we wanted to discuss why we love this series so much–both the books and the movies.

Let’s start with how we found this series. It was back in August 2011. I (Sasha) remember hearing about the series, and so one day Sarena and I sat down together and decided to read the sample online. I remember feeling so captivated, so enthralled, by the first chapter–and once I read the end of Chapter 1 (Katniss hearing Prim’s name), I remember gasping and wanting–no, needing–this book. We bought it from Costco that same month, and Sarena read it, and loved it.

I didn’t end up reading it until October 2011. By the time I was reading it, a bunch of friends in our music class had already read the series, and we would all talk about how excited we were from the movie. I read it, and soon the trailer was out that same month, and I remember watching it at my aunt’s house with Sarena. It was just such a significant moment for me, knowing that I would join this huge fandom and be able to watch a new film every year. You’re probably thinking: but you did that for Harry Potter! Nope. I didn’t finish the Harry Potter series until this year (January), and I’d watched all the movies before having read the books. Sarena read the whole series in 2011, just before Deathly Hallows pt 2.

So basically, what I’m trying to say is that The Hunger Games was really–and still is–our first series where we could really be apart of the fandom, where we could watch films of books we’d already read and loved. Of course, we still consider HP our first “real” fandom, since we’ve had the books and have had this series in our lives since we were children. But that’s also just what makes THG so wonderful–besides the plot, the characters, and the themes; just the fact that we got our first fangirl experiences out of this movie franchise was a pivotal point in where we are today as fangirls/members of this fandom.

We’d have to say Catching Fire is our favourite book in the series, hands down. Though the first book was good, we can’t deny how amazing the arena was and all the plot twists and action (and romance–TEAM GALE!) were amazing, too.

Though we’re not big fans of Mockingjay, we quite enjoyed MJ pt 1. We can’t wait to see MJ pt 2, but at the same time, we’re sad to let this movie franchise end. The Hunger Games holds such a special place in our hearts, as it was the first dystopian series we’d ever read (unless you count Uglies, but we consider that more sci-fi). The concept was just so bizarre, but so amazing at the same time. And we appreciate the honesty of the books too–no matter how violent, no matter how much war, because that’s how the real world is. It may take place in the future, but the dust jacket flap says it all: a book with “unsettling parallels to our present.”

Is there a reason why you love THG? What was your first fandom moment? Let us know in the comments below, and thanks for reading! 🙂
